DISSONANCE

This variety of triangles with differing fabric patterns in an asymmetrical arrangement produces a feeling of  tension and dissonance. This is not  how I generally view the “music of life”, but I wanted to break out of my traditional method of approaching our challenges. A literal interpretation of music and its beauty was not intended.  After looking at some examples of “modern art” I was struck with the idea of creating something which was not literally musical, but rather portrayed an aspect of music which is almost antithetical to the harmony one usually expects and appreciates.

For a previous project, I had fused and cut out triangles, but that idea failed to come together. The fabrics I used are a combination of commercial, hand dyed, acrylic monoprints and digital inkjet prints. The quilting, although parallel, hopefully enhances the dissonance theme. The arrangement of the pieces follows no set pattern. The placement of the black lines and the shapes going off the edge of the composition are intended to increase the tension.

  1. This really does portray dissonance, Judy- I can hear Stravinsky's Rite of Spring playing in the background! I like your alternative approach to this challenge, and think everything about the composition adds to the sense of dissonance.

  3. I agree with Beverly and Lisa. You have indeed capture a sense of dissonance. The placement, the colours, the black strips, add perfecting to that sense.

  4. I had to google and play Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and now of course when I hear this piece or another similar I will picture your Dissonance. I really like your color choices and design of this whole piece, it seems so well resolved, my eyes keep moving and wanting more. So dissonance is a beautiful thing!

  5. Well portrayed Judy! You've introduced just the right tension and discord with your use of fabrics and quilting - I like!

  6. I love your colours and how they sit with the quilting to show notes that are dancing in discord on the music lines. I don't know if you meant that, but that is what it looks to me. I would love this on my wall!

  7. Well done Judy! Le Sacre du Printemps sure has those disonants and was not well received in Paris when it was first performed.
You’ve captured it wonderfully with the edgy points of the triangles and the sort of balanced chaos, which is how Le Sacre sounds to me!
